Backwoods Bound Bullet Volume 15 - Issue 10

Welcome to the October 2014 issue of The Bullet. Here we are at the start of one of the best times of the year, deer hunting season. I can’t wait to sit quietly in my stand and watch the world of the forest go about its business. I enjoy watching the squirrels jump from tree to tree in search of food. To watch chipmunks scurry around in the leaves below my stand and I love to have a chickadee land on a branch in front of me and give me that “what the heck are you?” look as they eye me up. It’s also a kick to watch the critters flee as a red-tailed hawk or great horned owl fly past or circle overhead. Yup, I can’t wait.

I mentioned a couple of months ago how at times everything just falls into place when putting together an issue of The Bullet and it all goes together so smoothly. Well this wasn’t one of those times but I think we pulled it off so I hope you enjoy the one hundred and sixty ninth issue of The Bullet. Until next month, J. E. Burns, Editor-in-chief.

ARTICLE:  15 HUNTIN’ TIPS TO USE THIS SEASON

Maybe you’ll learn something new from these tips sent in by our readers or they might reinforce something you already know or have forgotten. Whatever the case, have a safe and successful hunting season.

  * While deer hunting always keep an open ear for a sneezing deer. All deer, like us humans, sneeze quite often. This is especially helpful while hunting thickets and heavy cover that have minimum visibility. - Andy Adsmond

* When turkey hunting, never stalk noises or follow the sound. It could be another hunter. - Gerald Kelley

  * Don't go buy an expensive hauling handle and sled. Make your own from a ¾” thick sheet of plywood that is eight feet long. Use the entire 4 foot width or cut it down if desired. Drill two ½” holes in the middle of one of the short ends about one inch from the edge and/or two sets of holes one toward each edge if you will have two people dragging it. Then tie a length of rope through each hole. At the other end of the ropes tie a piece of 11/2" inch dowel rod of any length. This will save you money and the hide of your game. - Matt Mitchell

  * If you forget your cover scent when you go out hunting just find yourself a cedar tree. Cut a couple of cedar branches off to use as cover. Leave them on or around your stand or blind. Also stick some needles in your pockets or pin small branches to your body to break up your shape. A healthy cedar branch will release scent for weeks maybe months. – Rock Solid

  * When out hunting squirrels, look near the bottoms of pine and willow trees. Use a .22 rifle with subsonic bullets and after you shoot don’t go get the squirrel as more will come out because they will be curious to what the noise was. Squirrels also drink syrup out of holes in maple trees. - Rex

  * When getting ready for hunting season, use scent free shampoo/condition and styling products continuously for a least 1 month prior to season (and during). Your hair will hold a lot of smell especially if you have a lot of it. - Demetria Westbrook

  * Don't get bored while hunting. Hang a bird feeder near your deer hunting stand. Not only will it keep you from getting bored it also catches the deer’s attention and less likely to catch you in your stand. Trust me it works and its fun. - Bucky Farlee

  * When coon hunting if there are more than one coon in the tree, take the lowest one. Chances are it’s the boar unless all are sows. - Raymond "Coon Tail' Allen

  * While hunting make sure of your target and what’s beyond it. - Gerald Kelley

  * If you plan on using a brand name cover scent when deer hunting, try not to use too much, because it does have a slight scent of its own. Use about 3-4 sprays over your upper and mid body, and a slight spray on each foot. - Aj Luimes

  * On deer stands, duct tape all the hooks and latches on the doors so they don’t bang against the side or tree when getting in and out. Also glue some foam to the door so it doesn’t bang against the side or tree when getting in and out. Any noise coming from wood banging against itself is a killer in the woods. - Larry Gene Pate

  * Apple sauce is a thing that deer really love! - Sheldon Hice

  * Try using an old bicycle inner tube as a bow string silencer. Cut up a small piece of the tube, 2" x 2". Cut the section into strips and tie a granny not in the middle. Place through your bow string and you’re ready to shoot. - John

  * While rabbit hunting you should wait behind the dog never in front. Also don’t rush because the dog can miss a rabbit. - Rickie Williams

  * A great way to attract bears, deer, coyotes, foxes and many other animals is to mix a 50/50 vanilla and water mixture together. Place in spray bottle and if you spray it on trees. Animals love this stuff and come lick it off. Spray a little in the air too. - Cameron Harris

FUN FACT:   Here's a bit of Bass trivia for ya from our buddy Buck Thorn.

The oldest bass on record is a 6.78 pound Largemouth that was caught by Mark Lenegar of Schenectady fishing at Mariaville Lake in New York. Biologists determined the fish to be 24 years old. This is truly rare since few reach 16 years of age.

The funny thing is not only was this bucketmouth really old but apparently senile as well. Mark hooked and released the dumb lunker twice before finally deciding after the third time, to keep it and have it mounted.

ARTICLE:   GIFT AMONG FRIENDS by David L. Falconer

Deer season is right around the corner and here at the Shiloh Ranch in Haskell County Oklahoma we are looking forward to our good friends James and Josh Burns returning this muzzleloader season. Last year I invited James to bring his son Josh along. To me hunting is more about the friendship and memories being made than it is about animals taken.

James long ago became a friend as opposed to a client and it is a good thing for me because no client would put up with the ribbing we give James. We ride him unmercifully, but he gives back as well as he takes it so it evens out – somewhat! He is still outnumbered!

We had heard James talk about hunting with his son Josh in Illinois and how he would fit in with our group so I wanted to give James better odds at winning in our friendly verbal “exchanges”. So this season along came Josh.

From the get-go I made sure everyone knew Josh was hunting as my guest. I put up a comfortable 2-man stand for him well hidden in the oaks and cedars along the north edge of an old pond on 40 acres of my property only one other guy ever hunts and he is along the southeast corner. Across the pond I put a feeder and mineral lick as well as a camera. He had bucks and does coming to the feeder and I banned anyone else from sitting in it. I also let him use my old 4-wheeler for getting around the property. Now part of this is me wanting Josh to kill a deer and have fun. The other part is I have never went to this much trouble for James – a point I am sure James will notice when they arrive, even if he does not say anything. (Yes, we play mean in Oklahoma!!)

That first morning everyone is in their stands as the sun comes up. I don’t remember what time it was now, but I was in my stand when I hear Josh shoot. And then he shoots. A little bit later he shoots again. I know he shot 3 times at least!

Josh successfully took his first Oklahoma deer with only 3 shots fired. The first shot wounded his deer and anchored it, but it was still moving so in an act of mercy he shoots at it again . . . and misses. So he shoots a third time. The multiple shots fired attributed to the name of the new deer stand and so now Josh hunts The OK Corral, the scene of his first “gun fight” with an Oklahoma deer.

Josh had a very successful muzzleloader season at The OK Corral with multiple deer taken for the season. Whether it was helping cook or clean up, Josh was a good hand in camp or at the cook stove. We found out James was right—Josh does fit right in and at the end of the hunt I invited him back.

Sipping whiskey late one night just the two of us, James thanked me for letting Josh hunt with him and offered to pay for Josh’s hunt because it meant that much to him. James had just beaten the weight record for the biggest doe killed on the ranch EVER and was feeling pretty successful himself. I told him I felt pretty darn good about the memories he and Josh had made together and I didn’t want to be paid for that. That was a gift from one friend to another.

FISHIN' TIP:   Since carp suck in the bait instead of attacking it, your bait should only cover the barb and bend of the hook. Three kernels of corn are usually about the right amount to do the job. Use a # 8 hook for small carp and up to a # 2 for large fish and keep them sharp. - Fisherman Bob

ARTICLE:   BIOLOGISTS CONCLUDE SECOND YEAR OF IDNR OSPREY RECOVERY PROJECT

Ten Osprey chicks relocated to Illinois from Langley Air Force Base, Virginia

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) biologists are wrapping up the second summer of a long-term project to re-establish the osprey as a nesting species in the state. The osprey is listed as an Illinois state-endangered species, meaning it is at risk of disappearing as a breeding species. While the osprey often is seen during spring and fall migration, few remain in Illinois to nest. Birds from Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia are brought to Illinois to be released at Anderson Lake in Fulton County and Lake Shelbyville in Moultrie County.

“The young birds are loyal to the place where they grow up and often return to nest,” said IDNR Biologist Patrick McDonald. “Similar programs carried out in other states have been successful in boosting the number of nesting birds, and we hope to have the same result here in Illinois.”

This was the second year of an eight-year project. Birds removed from nests near JBLE-Langley, where their local population is abundant and pose a threat to military aircraft in flight, are driven to Illinois. The birds are provided free of charge as part of an ongoing effort to promote wildlife conservation efforts while mitigating bird aircraft strike hazards at JBLE-Langley. Young birds receive a physical check-up at the Illinois Raptor Center in Decatur before they are placed in nest boxes for up to two weeks. While in the boxes, birds have a view of their surroundings. They are fed and monitored by students and field technicians from the University of Illinois Springfield under the direction of Dr. Tih-Fen Ting, Environmental Studies Dept.

The osprey is a fish-eating hawk that migrates south and winters from the southern United States to South America. Birds raised in Illinois will begin their fall migration soon. Two of the birds released this summer are equipped with satellite transmitters to allow their movements to be tracked.

“We are justifiably proud of our endangered species recovery efforts, and also are grateful to the many partners that help us accomplish this important work,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller. “Our partners provide additional expertise and help us make the best use of funds entrusted to us to help bring back endangered species.”
