Opening weekend for deer season occurred this past Saturday in South Texas and I was invited to attend a traditional hunting camp fiesta. The location was "La Mota Ranch" 25 miles west of Kingsville and the occasion the 1st annual Pete Zamora deer hunt. The fiesta would feature live Tejano music by award winning Grammy musicians, local wild game straight from the ranch, and all the tasty beverages you could drink. Most of the hunters worked for Reynolds / Alcoa Metals plant in Gregory Texas and some retired Military decorated soldiers. Mr. Pete Zamora the ranch manager is a Vietnam war hero who served several brave tours of duty with the Army and is a talented Tejano songwriter. The event was a special occasion that celebrates a Hispanic tradition for Native Texans and promotes outdoor activities for others. Nearly 100 local men gathered at the ranch on opening day treated with a great Wild Hog dinner and live entertainment after the day of hunting. hunters from many camps gathered and socialized steadily about past / present hunting opportunities that have resulted in story worthy material. In the end, the weekend was a blessing, spending quality time in the outdoors with good people and enjoying a passion of mine that so many share with me. Good luck to all you hunters this year, I hope that you time at the hunting camp is significant and important to all of ya ll!!!
